Land Yachts

9th Mar 2017

P7 have been using different skills to design, make and test model land yachts.  When we had finished making our yachts, we discussed how we would conduct a fair test to find out which model would travel the furthest.

After much discussion, we knew that for a fair test, only one thing in the test could be changed, which in this case was each person’s land yacht.  That meant the following things must remain the same in each test:

  • The test track
  • That the rear wheels must be in the same place for each test – the start-line must be the same
  • The time that the wind blew (hair-dryer) must be the same
  • The same hair-dryer should be used
  • The hair-dryer must be in the same place for each test
  • Same method of measuring the distance should remain the same

After we agreed on the test, we had great fun conducting the experiment.  There were some marvellous distances reached.  The winning yacht travelled 4m 52cm (almost 15ft).

Well done to all who took part.
